Dummies guide to stickers

Dummies guide to stickers
When we talk about stickers, most of us would probably think of the regular glossy vinyl stickers we put on our water bottles, laptops or the ones our teacher gave us for a job well done. There are, however, so many more (arguably better) options out there!

Sticker types - what’s the difference?

Now, don’t get me wrong, I never said no when Mrs Roberts in second grade asked me to choose a smiley face sticker from her pad of 100, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t eyeing up the shiny star stickers on the other pad as well. Greedy? Nay. Just in awe of the prettiness. Little would I know, something bigger and better was waiting. Later in the year, I would receive the Principal’s Award - a certificate adorned with the biggest and shiniest gold foil AND embossed sticker…I honestly don’t remember the achievement, but that sticker!

Point is, there are many different sticker types out there, and it helps to know what they are because you might prefer one over the other. So for those of you who haven’t come across terms like die-cut or PET stickers,  I’ve put together a simple table of sticker terminologies.

This is by no means an exhaustive list but hopefully it's enough to help you wrap your head around the basics.

  • can be written on easily
  • can be torn apart (depending on your intention this could be a pro or con)
  • can be translucent (a.k.a. tracing paper) or opaque
  • ink can run if comes in contact with water/oil

PET

  • stands for polyethylene terephthalate
  • durable
  • water/heat/tear resistant

Die-cut

  • also known as ‘contour-cut’
  • cut to actual contour of sticker
  • cut is through both sticker and its paper backing

Kiss-cut

  • cut is only through the sticker layer and not the paper backing
  • makes for easy peeling

Finish

Glossy

  • shiny surface
  • smooth touch
  • makes sticker comparatively more water resistant depending on material

Matte

  • dull/lustreless surface
